The new year is a time when many people give their lives an overview, looking at the previous year and using their experiences to form new goals, desires and dreams...it's a good time of year to do this, the new year is like a blank canvas, the pristine new page, an opportunity to start afresh and make some changes to our lives and to ourselves.

Although I do not personally go in for the resolutions of new year, I do find it to be a good time during the winter months to slow down a little, take stock and 'check in' with myself about where I am, where I want to be and how I feel about it all. As a healer, it is something that I do regularly throughout the year and it is a healthy way to move forward through life, gently assessing what we have been experiencing and deciding whether it's making us feel good or not or that we are going in the direction of our dreams or not.

New year can feel daunting and depressing to some, once the festivities are finished, it can feel like there is very little energy left for anything and little to look forward to...it can be a challenging time for some but if we simplify things down a bit...or a lot...and take life and the dreams we are wanting to create in smaller bites, smaller steps, things begin to seem more do-able, more achievable and this can help us to open our minds to positive, bit-sized changes that feel more fun, more uplifting and more satisfying.

Remembering that each moment is also a new beginning is empowering too, every time we take another breath, we can choose to change the way we are thinking...about anything, be it ourselves, our day, our people...anything at all...we can take our power back each moment towards a thought that makes us feel better, that brings us more ease, peace or joy...these smallest of changes in direction are the most powerful of all, the small steps are the ones we feel better able to manage, so we can allow those changes to pivot our thinking towards feeling better.

Sometimes it may take some time to get from feeling low to feeling joy but by that incremental ascent towards feeling more relaxed and easy with ourselves takes us back to our true selves...every time. If we focus on that better feeling thought for long enough, it leads to more of the same type of thinking and it takes us back to our selves, it takes us home again.

So, how do we do this? Take some time today when you have a moment or two...take a breath, how do you feel in this moment? Happy, filled with joy? If so, that's great, if not, take time to look forward just a little, and think:

"what would make me feel better now?"

A sit down perhaps, a moment to yourself, some fresh air, exercise, creativity, sleep, a snack, reading or watching something funny...any simple thing that is uplifting, relaxing, comforting or indulgent to you...find time to check in more regularly and take action on your findings and you will begin to experience more joy and fulfilment in your world...after all, life is supposed to be fun and the small moments of joy begin to knit together until they create the majority of your experience.

When we begin to feel more relaxed, through doing something simple to feel better in this moment, we are becoming more centred again and that is the perfect time and place to begin looking ahead and getting a feeling for the bigger picture that you would love to create for yourself...we can only create love and harmony, success etc when we are in this relaxed and centered place...for that is our true place of clarity and power...where all our dreams and inspirations become stronger and clearer to us and where we feel more able to make loving changes in our lives.

We can start over every moment again and again...a new beginning point...there is no rush, no limitation...allow yourself to create the life you want this year through joy, ease and perfect timing...life really is on your side if you allow it to be...and the more we choose that better feeling thought, it will lead to harmonious love-based actions and creations in our lives. And then, the journey of a thousand, million moments of feeling better becomes the more desirable experience that we are living every day rather than a goal off on the horizon made of "when I achieve _________then I'll feel better"...choose to feel better now and the rest will fall into place perfectly!

The only constant thing in life is change, and yet, most of us rail against it. We fear that which don't understand and we don't understand the unknown...and change is the unknown!

In order for us to be healthy and to experience life fully, we must be open to change. Many people believe that change is usually something that happens to them, without their consent. Or, that change is usually for the worse. Sometimes, this can be true of course but change is part of life, the natural cycle of things. It can also bring growth, new opportunities and improvement to our lives. Positive change enriches and nurtures us.

So, why do we put off making changes? Why shy away from new opportunities that might make our lives amazing? Because we fear the unknown, and often we can have the tendency towards judging the future against our past experiences. We can become too comfortable in situations that are really no longer healthy, happy or supportive of who we are now, but the fear of letting go can prevent us moving forward and making new changes. What if I get it wrong? What if changing things makes my life worse instead of better? Sometimes, it's just easier to stay put, stay stuck, stay restricted.

If we had a crystal ball, making changes would be so much easier! But this is where our intuition, our True Self comes into play. That is our own, in built crystal ball. It's there to act as our wise guidance system. It's the part of us that knows everything, that is pure love, and that is always on our side. If we can learn to trust that guidance system, we begin, step by step, to make love-based choices in our lives, and that means love-based change. This is the kind of change that opens doors, that helps us find the right people and generally starts to raise our quality of life. This is the kind of change we want!

Change in life is inevitable, we can resist it but that never ends up creating a fulfilling result. We can act like a victim, feeling out of control of our life and what's happening in it, or we can begin to face things, step by step and make positive changes ourselves. By listening to our inner guidance and acting on that, one small step at a time, we can begin to shape the course of our life, by creating positive, love-based changes. By doing this more and more, we become stronger, and making positive changes gradually becomes easier because we learn that it brings more love, joy and well-being to us. We begin to shift into a positive pattern regarding change and how we experience it.

We all have those times when hiding under the duvet feels like the best way to go, hoping that when we come out from our hiding place, life has somehow magically improved (the magic life improving duvet - another thing to put on the 'must invent one of those' list)...and it is important to take time to feel those fears, doubts and feelings that have been hiding away too, these are the blocks that have prevented us from moving forward and changing before, so it is important to deal with them, to face them head on. To be gentle with ourselves, be kind when change is taking place, is essential. Change is a process, not a race. Even positive change means letting go. It can trigger a grieving process that must be recognised and honoured.

Take time, be honest with yourself, what are your goals? Dreams? What small step can you take today towards making them happen? If we can embrace change, bit by bit, life begins to get interesting, full, rich and satisfying. Remember to limber up first though, small steps! It's like exercising, get those muscles ready before doing anything too major. Allow change to be powerful but allow it to come lovingly into your life. Big change doesn't have to be like a tidal wave, knocking you off your feet. Change can happen like that but it's often a series of smaller, more manageable steps that make big change happen over time.

Get quiet with yourself today, if you feel out of control, unhappy or unsatisfied, just sit for a while, get in touch with your inner guidance system by listening to your heart, it whispers, so be still. If you can feel it pulling you in certain directions, see how you can make some small steps towards that. Take notes, writing things out clarifies and clears. If you're doing that and you start to feel better, more energy, more you, then you know you're on the right path. Remember, change can be wonderful!

The crown chakra is where we receive Universal energy, in the form of wisdom, intelligence and spiritual knowledge. When we are in balance, we move through life with clarity and peace, with a pure understanding of life, with acceptance. We feel in tune with 'why we are here' and our life path. When we accept this, we create harmony and right relation with all life, which then expands our own consciousness as well as creating greater harmony around us and in our world.

When there are blockages in this area, leading to a closed chakra, the Universal energy cannot come through as it normally would, through to the rest of the body. This begins to create blockages and imbalance through the entire body. (This is also the case with the base chakra when energy is trapped there and can't leave the body).

Also, when this centre is too open, too much energy comes in, and we become too influenced by the collective consciousness around us, losing our sense of self, who we are and why we are here. The extreme cases where this is happening are those of paranoia and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. All mental illness is related to the crown chakra, including depression.

The crown and base chakras are linked, so when one becomes blocked or out of balance, so the other becomes unbalanced. When the crown chakra is blocked it can be very healing to take solace in nature, be outside and become grounded. Re-connecting like this will help to re-centre and pull the energy through to the base chakra where it can be grounded and released into the earth. By walking, exercising, gardening or doing any outdoor pursuits, it re-connects us to the earth and begins to rebalance the crown chakra. It brings clarity and perspective to situations and to life.

I connects us to the Divine, our higher self, which is 'who we really are'. When we are in synch with our higher self, we connect easily with others, life and the world, we are happy and fulfilled in life because we understand ourselves and our life purpose, we have a better understanding of life in general and are accepting of it.

Some say that the crown chakra becomes fully functional in our 40's. It's interesting because that's often the time in life when we do feel more settled and have begun to understand life more fully. When we aren't able to accept life, ourselves or others, it blocks the Universal flow to us and we become cut off from life and our true higher selves. It causes mental pain and separation, and the restriction of energy through the crown chakra reduces the amount of energy to the rest of the body, causing low energy, exhaustion and confusion.

As mentioned earlier, when the base chakra is blocked, a build up of energy in the system occurs, causing imbalances in other ways, including over sensitivity to energy, light, sound and life. Often this has occurred through experiences such as abuse, deep shock/trauma or repeated criticism, judgement or blame. In these cases, the individual shuts off from the earth, believing it's not safe to be fully here and grounded in the body. The connection is lost. They become withdrawn and disconnected from life as a means of self-preservation. Unfortunately, this only causes further problems and further disconnection from life.

We all have a purpose in life and are all relevant important human beings. Clearing the fear-based beliefs about 'why we are here' and 'what's my purpose?' begin to show a re-connection with our Divine self, pure love, harmony and well-being. Clearing the past emotional baggage and fear helps us to re-connect with life from a love-based perspective, it helps us to understand life more fully and more clearly, from a more spiritual point of view. We begin to be able to see things from all perspectives, not just our own and are able to live life in a more mature, harmonious way, knowing that life is on our side.

The third eye chakra governs issues of physical, spiritual and psychic sight. When this chakra is clear, we see everything in a 'real' or clear way, giving ourselves the guidance we need in order to move forward in life in a balanced way. When the third eye is blocked, there is a need to take time to look within, to find the truth of the matter, problem or situation. Often the mind/ego takes over from true sight with good intentions, good ideas, or colouring the way we're seeing ourselves, others, or situations.

The third eye chakra is about clarity, the way we see things, life, ourselves, and others. It is our intuition and inner knowing that guides us through our hearts, and our spiritual insight. It is the centre that also is related to the opposite of clarity; confusion. When we see/perceive from a place of fear, we see illusion, we experience pain and suffering because we're listening to our ego instead of our higher self.

Our lives and what (or who) comes into them, is governed by our beliefs and our thoughts. The third eye is all about seeing and thinking and therefore creating from a place of clarity, a place of love. When we do this, we attract and create more harmony and love into our life experience. When we focus our attention on negativity and problems, fears and doubts, then, not only are we choosing to believe that is the truth for us, we are also creating more of the same and attracting it to us.

The third eye is our centre of vision, not only our physical sight but also our vision of life, it's where we connect with our imagination, inspiration and ideas. It governs our sight and our hearing, both the inner dialogue and outer. It is the centre of our perception and this is something that can be changed, from a negative perception to a positive one. It changes every situation we experience, because we are constantly deciding what to think about everything and everyone, about life and what's possible for us. We decide whether something is right, wrong, good or bad. Either we accept or judge, allow or criticize.

When we see things through the cloud of confusion and fear, we aren't seeing clearly and it causes imbalance in the third eye. We are in conflict with our true self, our clarity. This creates imbalance and blockages in the third eye area, these sometimes manifest as headaches, migraine, also sinus, eye and ear aches or illness. Often, the individual is forced to close their eyes and rest, allowing the third eye to re-balance the situation, so they can see the truth of the situation and then take responsibility for the situation at hand.

The third eye is balanced when we can see and hear clearly, when we are willing to look at ourselves through the eyes of love and take responsibility for what we choose to create in life. It's too easy to choose to see others as the problem, or to ignore life by distracting habits, too much T.V etc...but when we face things and are willing to see things clearly, we can move forward in a more healthy, balanced way.

The things we think directly affect the way we feel, so it's really important to take control of the topics you give your attention to. Fear can so easily seduce you into a mental battle, re-running problems or worries over and over in your mind. Meanwhile, the moment of now is passing you by...Learning to catch the trains of thought and realising there is a choice about what we spend our mental energy on helps to powerfully change life because it is taking power back from the ego. The more we do this, the more influenced by our third eye, our inner truth we become and our lives become more filled with beauty because we choose to see that it's there!

Being responsible isn't doing the chores on time or about achieving materially, it's about being your own authentic self, choosing to see the truth and acting accordingly. It brings balance and health to our lives, which in turn brings joy, love and abundance.

The throat chakra is a powerful area because it governs three powerful aspects and needs in our lives: Change, Communication and Control.

It is the centre where we express ourselves, our feelings, needs, ideas and general opinions. The throat chakra is connected with the sacral chakra because it's the final stage of creation, to express, to release and to let go. The throat chakra is where we hold everything in, where we wait until we feel ready, able or allowed, to express ourselves. We control our expression here and it is where we allow others to control us and our lives too.

Change is the only constant thing in life and yet we can struggle with it. The lower self/ego hates change and being out of control, it fears change. Yet change is growth, freedom and expansion. Change is improvement, space and stimulation. It is the very air we need to exist fully.

The throat is where we decide whether to speak up or keep quiet, swallow the feelings down or express them. Let go or hold on. The emotions stored in the body cannot be released until we let them out, through the throat chakra. Imbalances in the sacral chakra are linked with the controlling and non-releasing at the throat chakra. If we feel it's unacceptable to speak up, be ourselves, change or create, we will block it at the throat and this blocks us all the way down to the sacral chakra, the creative centre, where the process begins.

It's so important to be able to express ourselves and yet, it can be so hard to do. Upbringing plays a big part in expressing oneself, often, children are to be seen and not heard, or the other extreme, had to shout to be heard in a large, busy family. Many people fear being honest, talking openly about their feelings, desires and ideas. We worry about hurting others' feelings or causing a scene. Sometimes we are confident expressing in certain areas of our lives but in others, cannot find the words. Healing helps us to find loving ways to express ourselves, even the most difficult things can be expressed lovingly, once the backlog of emotion has been released safely and appropriately.

Most of us have some kind of control issues in life, whether big or small and we must learn to trust that we are taken care of by life in every way, which, in turn, gives us the freedom to focus on creating the lives we want - free of controlling agendas. We learn that we can only control our own lives through learning to manifest the things we desire, by focusing on what we want not what we don't want. We learn that we can't control others and that, when we try, it only leads to disappointment and guilt. We must also stop controlling our emotions to the point of suppression and learn to express and accept ourselves more completely as human beings.

Problems occur in the throat chakra area when we bottle up emotions or words that need to be said, when we deny our creativity an outlet. Also, when we feel we don't deserve to succeed. If we feel others are trying to control us, or we feel restricted in life. Sometimes people complain about feeling blocked or even like they're being strangled, or experiencing a sore throat that won't go away. A stiff neck is often reflecting a stiff way of dealing with something, refusing to be flexible and change. The need to firstly communicate with themselves is the key and to give permission to express whatever needs to be expressed is the path to health.

Tips to balance the Throat Chakra:

Spend time alone and listen to how your feeling; the first step to communicating clearly to others is to first hear yourself clearly

Give yourself permission to speak up. If you're too emotional, spend time releasing it before speaking in order to communicate from a place of love and clarity

Accept that the only thing you can control is you and that you can create whatever you want in life. Reclaim your power by realising this

Allow yourself to change and grow. It's safe to be successful!

Write a 'no holds barred' letter and then burn it to express difficult emotions and things you just can't say

Get creative just for fun!

Know that it's ok to let your feelings out, it's healthy and it clears the way for the new

I hope you find this post helpful, it really can be useful to understand ourselves better and those around us too of course!
Related Emotions: Joy, Unconditional Love, Hurt, Bitterness, Grief
Spiritual Aspect: Self-Love

The Heart Chakra centres around giving and receiving unconditional love, both to others and to ourselves. It is the chakra that connects us to our 'inner being', our true self, which is pure love. It's from this centre that we learn to connect with life in loving ways and where we learn to allow people into our lives. It's a centre all about balance, giving, receiving, action, rest. The physical heart spends equal time in both rest and action, there is always a rest between each heartbeat. It is our heart that keeps us alive and which symbolises the need to live as a reflection of this balance in order to feel alive.

As with all the chakras, there is the fear-based emotion that is also associated with that chakra and the heart is the place where we all (whether consciously or not) store the emotions of hurt, bitterness and grief. These are all powerful emotions, which can cause us to shut the door to our heart and to block love coming to us. Unfortunately, this building of the barricades only helps us to feel safe for a limited time and actually blocks all the love out as well as the hurt. Eventually, closing off like this only leads to isolation, loneliness and feeling even less loved and understood than before.

By observing the nature of our hearts, we can learn to become more balanced and in tune with our own natural rhythms, which leads to a harmonious, healthy, joy filled life. Often, it is those rushing round, so busy, that end up suffering with heart problems as they don't feel it's ok or even practical to stop for a while and smell the roses along the way.

Sometimes, the imbalance comes from giving or caring too much for others while not receiving themselves. Many women who nurture others but not themselves develop breast problems, including cancer. They end up resenting that no-one is caring for them in the same way they do others and yet when love is offered to them, they recoil, feeling uncomfortable in the role of receiver. It is easier for them to be in control and give, rather than be open and receive. They care for others yet don't care about themselves, often using the caring for others as an excuse to avoid their own issues.

Balance is needed and over time, can be restored by learning to love ourselves unconditionally. Many of these imbalances have stemmed from early life, when the individual had to put others first all the time or when their feelings weren't heard or valued. Healing helps change the old ways to something new and more appropriate, where there is the understanding that there is more than enough love for everyone.

The ability to feel the hearts' whisperings takes time to develop, spending time in peace and nature helps to restore our natural state and to quieten the minds' chatter so we can feel the gentle pull from the heart towards that which we truly love. Our 'inner being' calls to us from the heart, urging us towards a happy, love filled life. Towards our life's purpose and calling.

Tips for balancing the Heart chakra:

Get quiet and take some deep breaths. Take your attention into your heart and feel. Your heart is your guide!

Forgive and release past hurts, they only hurt you and stop you being loved.

Find ways to nurture yourself, feel comfortable receiving love by practising it daily!

Allow yourself to grieve fully (see article on grief and letting go)

When giving to others, be sure to give unconditionally without strings attached.

Take time to be active and at rest, make whichever of these you're not used to doing a bigger part of your routine.

I hope you find this helpful as a starting point to understanding the way we work!
In many of my posts, I talk about our beliefs, and often, the need to change them so we can move forward in life in alignment with our Higher Self. This quote is so helpful in this respect as it reminds us that we are empowered individuals who shape our lives through our thinking and reacting...

The Solar Plexus Chakra governs self-worth, empowerment, anger, guilt and our male/active energy. It is where we connect with the world energetically. Basic Need: Valuing the needs of the Higher Self
Spiritual Aspect: Self-Worth

The Solar Plexus chakra is the house of the Ego, or lower self/personality. It is associated with confidence, self-worth and activity. We also (often without realising it) receive energy from other people and the outside world through this centre. The issues associated with the Solar Plexus are mainly of confidence and allowing oneself to be a powerful human being, guilt and sabotage free. Many people are conditioned to be less than powerful, or are taught that power is a bad thing, something to be tamed down. Power, in the true sense, is, however, a wonderful and necessary energy that we are supposed to be harnessing to create our world with. Power is love based and when used from a loving heart, will transform our health, lives and experiences.

Powerful emotions are stored here, such as anger, resentment and guilt. These all stem from fear of being powerful, or from a sense of powerlessness, feelings of being a victim or other fears that it is not OK to be a powerful and successful person. Often, people can resent the success of others, or try to control them. Sometimes, people can be taught to feel guilty about being successful, confident or abundant in life. Over time, suppressed emotions such as anger will cause health problems in the areas of the body that are governed by the Solar Plexus.

In order to heal this area, we must safely release the emotions and change the beliefs about power. If we learn to live from a love-based place, then our power will always be used for good and will always create good. We must trust our inner guidance about the decisions we make, so we begin to create the world we want to experience. Sometimes, we must stand up for ourselves, take responsibility and re-claim our power from others.

Over time, we must build confidence and lovingly approve of ourselves, instead of worrying about what others think. When we feel anger, we must breathe and look inside ourselves to see why we feel afraid, or threatened. We can always chose to change our thinking, words and actions to ones of love and peace. We are in control. When we blame others, we lose control by giving our power away.

The Solar Plexus is also associated with male energy. Our male energy is that of action, however, in order for the action to be successful or productive, it must follow the guidance of our inner female intuition, our inner wisdom, in order to be love-based action. When we allow the ego /mind to be in charge, it forges ahead blindly, making decisions based on past experiences, fears and negative thinking, as it is fear-based.

The Solar Plexus is the house of the ego, so we have to become mindful about the right use of power and action. Imbalances in this area are commonly seen in those who allow their ego's to rule them, or who do not value themselves highly enough. Many times, arrogance is mistaken for true confidence and healing these issues allows us to move forward in a more truly confident way.
It is the centre of all creation, including reproduction, but also all of the things we choose to create in life. It is a powerful, important centre, where we create our relationships including our relationship with ourselves, family, friends and everyone we connect with. It's the chakra that governs our purpose in life, our work, and all we choose to do in our lives! The Sacral Chakra is where all physical creation begins, the seed of life, be it a child or a new project, job or home.

If we feel unable to express and release our feelings within our relationships, or if we have trouble maintaining healthy boundaries with others, problems begin to arise. We all need to learn to respect ourselves and our needs in order for others to treat us in the same way. If we disrespect ourselves then we attract disrespectful behaviours from others because we're essentially saying to the Universe that this is OK. If we believe that we don't have a purpose in life, or don't know what that is, this leads to a dis-connection from ourselves and life, causing drifting and ill health.

The Sacral Chakra is a powerful one because our relationships and our life purpose are powerful and important areas of our lives. Creating balanced, healthy and respectful relationships can be difficult at times but by healing the problems from the past and by changing our thoughts and beliefs about relationships, we can begin to create more and more balance, health, respect and joy in our relationships. When we spend time going within and listening to our innermost feelings and urgings about what we are here to do in life, we can begin to create a healthy and happy life and by tuning into and focusing on our strengths and allowing ourselves the time and space to follow our dreams and use our natural abilities, we begin to create a satisfying way of life and income. We discover our true life's purpose!

The Sacral chakra is also a centre of balance between male and female energies, both within ourselves and our relationships with others. We all have both male and female energies and qualities, our female energy being our intuition, inner guidance, receptive, passive, gentle and nurturing qualities and aspects. Our male energy is our active, outgoing, giving and building qualities and aspects. Both male and female are equally valid and important, yet for many people these energies aren't balanced, many people are dominated by their male active side, indeed, our cultures often sadly reflect this back to us when you can see everyone rushing around, too busy too take a breath! This of course, is unhealthy and over time causes problems for the body. The activity becomes empty and meaningless.

To balance the Sacral chakra, we must all find our balance, learn to create time for both introspection and action. When we take action based upon the information given by our wise, intuitive female aspect (by taking time to check in with yourself to feel what the next step is for you/how you really feel etc.) the outcome will always be favourable. When we blindly keep going through life, believing the more we do, the better, we become lost and unfulfilled. All these issues fall under the Sacral chakra.

Tips for balancing the Sacral chakra:
Hi everyone, as promised, I'm starting the chakra series, covering the basics to help people to understand what they are, where they are etc.

There are seven main or major chakras and many minor ones that are situated around our body/aura. They are energy centres or concentrations of life force energy, which spin at different speeds. They are 'seen' as wheels of light, each one a different colour, the colour is created by the speed at which that chakra is spinning. The seven main chakras are located from the base of the spine up through the spine to the top of the head (see diagram below).

Having a general awareness of the chakras can help us to heal and understand why we manifest our illness or problems the way we do. Every belief, action or choice we make affects the amount of energy that can flow through us. When our chakras are balanced, we are healthy and in harmony with our Higher Self. When energy becomes blocked through stress, over work, negative, fear-based thinking, or trauma, our chakras become blocked or unbalanced, which affects the amount of energy/life force flowing through us. Each suppressed emotion or negative belief we hold is stored away in a particular area of the body and over time, these suppressed energies begin to manifest physical blockages which we experience as illness or physical pain.

My aim here, is to give a little insight into why and where we store the things we do (without consciously realising it of course) so that we can then clear them away and create increased health in all areas of our lives. I hope you find it interesting and helpful!

The Root/Base Chakra:
Colour: Red
Position: Base of the Spine
Associated Organs/Areas: Kidneys, Bladder, Rectum, Vertebral Column, Hips, Lower Back, Legs, Feet, Hands.
Endocrine Gland: Adrenal (cortisone)
Related Emotions: Fear, Courage
Basic Need: Security, Confidence
Spiritual Aspect: Self-awareness

The base chakra is associated with the base-ic needs in life. Our material needs for survival, including physical health and strength, money, home, work, and general safety. It is our fight or flight area! If we notice any health problems in the base chakra area of the body, we can look within to examine the possible underlying causes of the illness or pain, and see if we can connect them with the beliefs, emotions and issues that are governed by the root chakra.

Common problems occur in this area when there is a fear of not having enough, whether it be enough security, money or any material lack. Those who have suffered abuse will often have blockages in this area, as they feel it's unsafe for them to open to receive. The root chakra is our connection with the Earth and any negative beliefs we have about being here will block our connection and prevent us from being grounded and in the present moment, the very place where we need to be to create and receive abundance.

Issues about work and income are governed by the root chakra, often people are unsure of their direction in life or what they want to do for a living. Some believe that you can't enjoy your work and earn enough money as well. These and other restricted ways of thinking that we believe (or have inherited) are stored away in the lower part of the body and over time, can start to manifest into physical health problems. Many people suffer with lower back pain, hip, knee pain or stiffness, for example, sometimes these ailments are a physical manifestation of the pain or stiff way of thinking associated with moving forward in life or with a lack of support financially or materially.

It's all to easy to be in our heads, thinking, thinking, thinking and rushing around being too busy, often though, this is a dis-connection from ourselves and a way to avoid problems. It often causes problems in the root chakra area because the root chakra is where we store away old emotions regarding safety, money, our home and our belongings. It's where we store our fears about survival. Many people have a lot of fear surrounding their material security and loss of that security. Many confuse material security with true inner security and confidence.

Healing or balancing the root chakra develops inner security and true confidence, which is love-based and real. No-one can take these away! When we feel safe inside our own skin, we create and receive more security externally. If we focus our mind on security and being safe, having enough and on life taking care of us and taking care of the details about how things will work out for us, then we can relax more and let go into a deeper place of true inner security.

Tips for balancing the root chakra:

Wear red clothes, they increase a sense of security, warmth and increase/stimulate energy levels and circulation. Get some red socks! Have beautiful red things in your home to look at

Focus your mind on being safe, having enough, imagine what you want rather than what you fear

Take time off to re-balance and slow down. Hear and feel the fears then release them to feel more secure, rather than running away from them

Examine your beliefs about money, home, work and safety.

Take time to do what gives you joy! It builds confidence and helps us to feel good about being alive!

Meditate every day. See why in this post: Why Meditate?

People often ask me about the virtues of meditation, or they've heard that meditation's a good thing to do but don't know how to do it. Sometimes, people get confused about what they're supposed to be doing whilst meditating...

So why meditate? Well, meditation helps us in several ways, it can help us become less affected by the chattering of the mind, the inner dialogue, that can too easily steer us off course many times during every day. Meditation helps us by bringing us back to centre, it teaches us over time, to focus our awareness on our intuition, our hearts, instead of our mind. Meditation can help us to become deeply relaxed whilst remaining alert and mentally 'in the moment' and can help us to learn to become more detached from drama, both our own ego drama's and the dramas of those around us.

Our place of power is in the present moment, not the past or the future, we cannot change the past and we can only shape the future by being fully in the present moment, now. Yet it's often either the past or future where people get stuck in their minds, thinking about things that have happened or that might happen. It's natural for the mind to be thinking but it's important to become detached from the thoughts as they race through our minds. It's too easy to get caught up in a train of thought that often becomes negative and unproductive. We can easily waste so much time and energy in negative thought, which only leads to feeling miserable, weak or tired. Meditation helps us to become more self aware of how we use our minds and helps us to take back the reins rather than letting the mind run roughshod over our day and our lives!

When we have more peace mentally, we have greater clarity, which helps us to make more positive, love-based decisions and choices. This creates a more harmonious and healthy life for us. Meditating regularly provides us with the opportunity to become more at peace with ourselves, others and with life. It helps us to determine the truth about how we feel, what we believe and what we really want in life. It helps us to know ourselves more fully, which helps us to connect with others in more authentic, honest and love-based ways. It also accelerates the bodies' natural ability to heal itself because it relaxes so deeply. Our bodies' respond instantly to our thoughts, so a calm more positive mind set will help achieve a much healthier, stronger and more vital body.

Some people get confused about what meditation is, often, they believe it's about stopping thinking. This is not the case. Meditation is about quieting the mind and over time, becoming more detached and less affected by your thoughts. You cannot stop the mind from thinking but by becoming less drawn into the drama of the mind/ego, we can gain more clarity and truth. It is usually inevitable that you will catch yourself going off into a train of thoughts during meditation and that's ok, simply bring your awareness back to the present moment and start again. Accepting the mind and how it operates is the key.

As with all healing, acceptance is key to transformation. When we try to do something, we actually create resistance. It's the same with trying to stop thinking! All that happens is a struggle and a sense of failure! Meditation promotes a more steady, patient approach to life. We must accept that over time, things will change. The self discipline of meditating each day brings rewards gradually. It's not a quick fix but a new way of living. The virtues of meditation become clearer over time, we feel more at peace, we have more energy and are less affected by drama, both internal and external. It's the dramas of the mind that throw us off course in life, we can too easily follow them along, like our very own soap opera, getting completely sucked into the fear-based ways of the ego, until we've lost our way and ourselves.

There are many types of meditation and we must find one that suits us. I found the simple 'watching the breath' meditation to be the best for me, as it helps to bring attention back to the body and heart. Through watching the breath in and out, it keeps us in the present moment. It's grounding, relaxing and energising all at the same time! I find that Reiki energy flows in and the meditation becomes very healing. We must make time to regroup each day, meditation is the perfect way to do this. Find even a few minutes to relax and breathe, you'll soon feel the benefit. Don't expect too much, even if you achieve a few moments of peace between thoughts, you're achieving greatness! Gradually the peace increases and clarity ensues.

Sometimes we need to try out several different approaches, so don't despair if you haven't found the meditation that suits you yet. Simply try something else! If you'd like more information on the meditation I use, click on 'read more' at the end of this post. I've been meditating every day for nineteen years now, I find it has become just as important as brushing my teeth in the morning! At first, meditating was hit and miss but as I felt the benefits, it became easier to find the time in my day for it. Just remember, breathe and return to the moment that is now, the more you do this, the more peace you will have within you and you'll enjoy life so much more!

Watching the breath meditation:

Begin by finding a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths. Slowly allow your body to unwind and relax. Don't worry about your thoughts, just spend time focusing on each part of your body, from your feet up to your head, imagining each part loosening and becoming very comfortable.

When you have done this, begin to notice your patterns of breathing, don't try to change them or control the breathing, just observe what your body is doing and accept it peacefully. Bring your attention to your chest, noticing your in breath and then the out breath. All the time you're focusing on your breathing, you're thoughts become quieter and less pushy. Your attention is on your breath and body instead. The body becomes still and relaxed more and more fully.

When you continue to focus your attention on your breathing, you may find that sometimes, your attention wanders back to the thoughts in your mind. That's ok. When you notice yourself thinking, just take another breath and go back to watching your breathing in and out again. The process is simple. Imagine the thoughts going in one ear and out the other, as if on a conveyor belt. Allow them to be there, to exist. At the same time though, let them go, notice the thought and let it go. Come back to the breath. Every time, come back to the breath.

Continue meditating for twenty minutes. If that's too much, then commit to ten minutes, every day. Build up to twenty minutes. Two sessions of twenty minutes each day is the optimum but just ten minutes a day will make a huge difference. Be flexible and fit it in when you can. Make it a priority! Meditation really is so powerful and we need to realise that rushing around being busy doesn't always achieve as much as simply sitting and being for a few minutes each day.

It can be really helpful to know about them because it can give us greater awareness of what our 'problems' are and what's causing us pain on a deeper level, which in turn, helps us to release and heal the blockage.

Each week, I will cover one chakra, so that by the end of the seven weeks, you should have a good overview and understanding of what they are, which will help you better understand yourself, your health 'problems' and the 'problems' that your clients have too. Although a knowledge of the chakras isn't specifically connected with Reiki, I found it so helpful when I learnt Reiki to learn about chakras too. My Reiki students all know this as I now include information in Level One training about chakras to give them a head start in learning about healing, both on a personal level and also for their family, friends and clients.

So keep an eye out for part one, all about the root chakra...coming soon!

The Universe is an abundant place, just look to Nature and see how many blades of grass are growing in your back lawn, or look up to the stars at night to see how many millions of stars there are. Take a trip to the ocean and drink in the vastness of the water. Abundance is all around us. Yet often, it's something that many people struggle with in their lives.

As is often the case, we need to begin by focusing on what we want. If we're aware of lack or restriction somewhere in our lives, then we can start there to see why. It may be lack of love and support from others, or not having enough time, it could be lack of money, energy or good health. Whatever it is, we can begin to change our patterns of lack to patterns of abundance by changing our focus of attention from the 'problems' to thinking about what it is we really do want.

By shifting our attention, we're using our natural abilities of manifesting to create what we desire in our lives. Most people are unaware that whatever we focus on, we attract to us in our lives. We are powerful creators! If we focus our attention and energy on the fear-based thoughts and beliefs, then we'll create fear-based situations or circumstances. If we can focus on what we really would love, then we're tapping into the Universal energy that creates everything and using it to create love-based situations and circumstances.

Often, when we begin thinking in a new, more positive way, it can trigger off the old, negative programming and beliefs that we hold and sometimes can bring to the surface old emotions that need to be cleared so we can move forward in a more abundant way. We need to examine why there are restrictions on our levels of abundance. Is it from childhood? What was there never enough of ________? Was there enough love, happiness, health, time, support, money? Did the adults in your life have happy jobs and earn enough money, or were they miserable in their work? Were you heard as a child? Were your boundaries respected and your feelings valued? Did you feel safe and taken care of?

The society we live in can also affect our thinking and our beliefs. We are often too influenced by the news and media, or by traditions and cultural beliefs, all of which we must examine to ensure that they ring true for us as individuals. There are old school beliefs that in order to become spiritually enlightened you must suffer, go without or learn the hard way. Many people simply believe that work is something you simply endure to get money. These are beliefs that we need to re-examine and change. It is possible to have a wonderful job and get your needs met financially, but not if your mind is closed to the possiblity. It is also possible, and preferable, to heal and grow spiritually in love-based ways without lack or suffering.

Self-worth is the part of us that always requires attention when there is lack in our lives, because, somewhere, maybe deep down inside, we don't believe we're good enough, or deserving enough to receive the increased amount of _______. Be it love, health, time, money etc. We may be craving more but there's still something blocking it from coming to us, actually, we're blocking it! The Universe is abundant and is pure love, it wants us to have everything we desire. We don't need to suffer in order to learn and grow, we can do that in abundant love-based ways.

Begin by identifying the areas in life that you feel are restricted for you. Sit, take some deep breaths and go inside to your heart. Take some quiet time there to feel what emotions are there, see if old memories come up about why you can't allow yourself to have more. Hear any old, beliefs kicking in about what's appropriate for you to receive, or what you deserve. Breathe through the feelings and release them, begin to imagine your world as you'd truly love it to be, feel it, see it in your imagination, make it as real as you can in your mind. Feel the joy it brings you to have abundance, see the freedom it gives you and realise how much more help to others you can be when you have greater resources. Spending a few minutes each day focusing this way really does make a difference.

"I deserve to be healthy, happy and loved"

If you believe you don't deserve more, then you must look inside and find out why. Then, forgive yourself and let the past go. Lack often is linked with guilt, without even realising it, we can be punishing ourselves years later for a 'mistake' we made. Cultivate unconditional love toward yourself. You are deserving now! Self-worth levels improve with healing, over time, so that gradually we can allow ourselves to have our needs met unconditionally from life, free of guilt or sabotage. Sabotage is one to watch if you keep creating extra expenses, so you still don't have enough money, or if the abundance starts to flow but then problems start to crop up, which take away the time, energy, health , money etc. that you have begun to receive. Sabotage means there is still a part of you that doesn't feel worthy and needs forgiveness.

If you have always been a giver, learn to love yourself more and to feel more comfortable receiving from others and from life. It's part of the natural cycle to receive more so we can continue to give to others. It is a strength to ask for your needs to be met, not a weakness. Begin to feel more comfortable receiving and trust that it's safe to do so. This will bring balance to your life. We must wish for abundance, imagine it as real now, and be ready to receive in order for the process to work successfully.

Look back to Nature and see the abundance and the beauty. We are all part of that. We are meant to be abundant and cared for. If we can change our beliefs and remove our blocks, the abundance is there already, waiting to flow into our lives!

Healing is a different process for each person. It's our individual way of clearing away whatever baggage and blocks have formed within us through our lives and brought us to where we are today. Healing is the unique process that each of us have which leads us back more fully to becoming our Higher Selves, that part of us which is complete unconditional love. Healing is clearing the fear-based thoughts, beliefs, words and actions that have caused us and others suffering. It is healing of the ego, the lower self. It is the ego aspect that we are all healing because it's this aspect which is always fear-based. It's our thoughts, resulting beliefs and emotions which create our reality and that too easily influence our words and actions. Together with the thoughts, resulting beliefs, emotions and actions of those around us, our experience of the world is created.

There are many roads and methods of healing, no one any better than the next, it depends on the individual to find the process that suits them best, which may change over time as they change. Healing is about clearing away the emotions that are triggered off in life by things that happen around us. Healing is also about releasing the past and changing our ways of thinking. Sometimes we're carrying beliefs from our childhood which will probably not be suitable, helpful or even relevant to our lives as adults. So, we need to change it up and adjust to beliefs that work for us and support us now. I mean, you don't expect yourself to fit into your clothes you wore at age five do you? It's really the same thing with beliefs! Healing is often about becoming firstly more self-aware, as we hold many beliefs inside that we're not consciously aware of but which, nonetheless, have a powerful effect on what we create in our lives and which influence the decisions we make as adults.

When we remove the baggage and blocks, we're ever increasingly able to create more love-based lives, make more positive, healthy choices and decisions and allow ourselves to receive more love from life and from other people by way of support, understanding, respect and help, for example. We become love-based empowered individuals who are healthy and successful, abundant and most of all, loving and secure. Our thinking comes more from our Higher Self, from a loving perspective, which will always create more love! When we see through eyes of love, we open up to witness how much beauty there is around us, which helps us to re-connect with Nature more fully and become more caring for our planet and it's other inhabitants. In short, we care more.

Through Reiki, I was able to unearth all sorts of beliefs I didn't know I had, but upon closer examination, I found out why I'd formed those beliefs about myself, other people and life and then understood that these beliefs were influencing my decision making and also colouring the way I'd sometimes see things. I refer to unearthed beliefs as 'hidden gems' because they give us our power back. I have worked with many people over the years, who have had no idea why they keep attracting certain situations or types of people, for example, into their lives. They keep repeating the same old patterns again and again. The problem is that this behaviour and resulting situations just re-enforces the old fear-based beliefs, which attracts more of the same. And so we go round and round in circles...sounding familiar?

Healing is about breaking the fear-based patterns in our lives by becoming more aware of what causes it in the first place and then by sowing new, positive beliefs and attitudes into our awareness, which, like small seeds, begin to grow and eventually flower into beautiful new ways of thinking, living and creating! When we begin to sow new seeds, the old beliefs can feel very deeply rooted, causing old pain and feelings to surface. This is part of the healing process and we must allow it to happen by feeling the emotions that surface fully, without judgement and then release them into the past where they belong. Healing can be miraculous, if we can be willing to feel what we have suppressed and let it go fully. Then love can flow into us and harmony (which is health) is reinstated.

Sometimes healing can take much longer, we must respect our own pace and support that. Some beliefs are very heavily loaded with emotions and are entrenched in our minds. There may be years worth of emotional baggage attatched to the old beliefs. If we can do our best to maintain more loving thoughts about ourselves, other people and life, more of the time, we can gradually begin to come back to the truth, to love. This is our Higher Self talking and the more we allow it to command our thoughts, beliefs, words and actions, the more love we will experience in our lives. Love is health, support, clarity, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, compassion, joy and abundance, among other things. Love is the Universal energy that creates everything and everyone, it is the energy that we all use either in love or fear, to create our worlds. Healing helps us to realise this, in our own individual way and helps us become who we truly already are: pure love!

So take some time today, just a few moments, or longer if you can, to take a few deep breaths, calm your mind and go within to your heart. It will tell you what you need to do to heal, to become more aligned with your Higher Self. Begin by getting in touch with yourself and how you feel. When there's a 'problem' go inside and feel what emotions you feel and what thoughts are running through your mind? "oh, that's typical!", "I never have enough________!", "people always let me down!" etc. These are the 'hidden gems' the beliefs that we need to replace with something new that will start to change your thinking, so you can change the patterns of what you attract. Write them down, no holds barred and when you're done, write an exact opposite, positive statement by each negative belief.

"people always love and support me unconditionally"

These are your personal seeds to nurture by thinking them over and over until gradually, you'll begin to believe them- a new set of beliefs are forming-when you think them, try to imagine how that new positive statement will make you feel when it's a reality for you, happy, strong, healthy, safe etc? This is where powerful healing starts to take place, powerful change. Stick with it, remember, you've had those other old beliefs most of your life, so be patient and consistent...for me, it's Reiki that has and continues to help me heal, for you, maybe it's the same, maybe not, just go with your heart to find your own healing path.
